Remote Work Retreat at Hygge House

Local coffee breaks and scenic walks are right out the front door.

“I can strike the perfect balance and do my best work. The work station is an ideal set up but sometimes I like sitting by the woodstove with the couch desk. Sitting next to the woodstove softens the edge of some meetings..”

Finding a balance between productivity and well-being is challenging. A few times a year, I use Hygge House as a working retreat and have set it up to support a comfortable work day. I’m sharing my experience with you, about a typical work from home day at the house so you can get to know how this can work for you. Knowing what to expect helps people to have a more enriching experience, and that’s the goal.

I technically can work from anywhere. But, here's the catch – I'm a bit of a diva when it comes to my workspace. I mean, a complete ergonomic setup, and at least one external monitor. I've tried the whole "work from a bustling coffee shop" thing, but it just doesn't vibe with me. I need a space that's intentional, comfortable, and uniquely mine. If I can work from here, anyone can.

I do my best work when I’m in a comfortable space so I set things up in a way that makes sense. The workstation has a comfy office chair, external monitor, and basic office supplies. BYOEK, that’s Bring Your Own External Keyboard (and mouse). Less formal working spaces include the dining roo There is a small table that pulls close to the couch so you can sit upright on the couch, near the woodstove. There’s also a lapdesk if lounging is your thing. Which for me, it is, in small doses.

Taking a quality break in the middle of the day is my jam. A quick trip to Saunderskill Farm Market, or Accord Market gets me out of the house for something fast and tasty. A turmeric latte from Lekker is a 5 minute drive.

The house is in close proximity to outdoor activities. I feel so privileged to even know this place exists. Lake Minnewaska is so accessible that you can go on a majestic 2.3 mile hike around the lake, surrounded by jaw dropping beauty, and be back home in an hour to cook dinner or go out. Even just walking out the front door and down Tow Path offers streams, fields, woods, and mountain views.

Get spoiled and go out to dinner. There’s handfuls of great spots just a few minutes away. It’s not hard to find good food and craft beverages because not only is the Rondout Valley a breadbasket, but it’s filled with talented, smart, crafty folks that keep the place buzzing with restaurants and farm experiences.

Hygge as a working retreat is balanced, calming, and fun.
